The Langley Cyber Attack and Popular Science

After the last CSSPAB meeting, I was contacted by Mr. Frank Vizard, Technology Editor for Popular Science. Mr. Vizard hoped to write a story on the Langley Cyber Attack for Popular Science readers. I immediately contacted USAF and discussed the opportunity with the senior USAF SC leadership, Lt. Gen. William Donahue. After reviewing the risks of printing the story on the cyber-attack in Popular Science versus the benefit to other government and civilian agencies, the decision was made by USAF to proceed with the story. I will not present further details on the detailed risk versus benefit discussions.

Mr. Vizard and I met with Brig. Gen. Dale Meyerrose, Lt. Col. Dave Gruber and other USAF personnel at Langley AFB who were active in the cyber-attack countermeasures. USAF was extremely helpful in reconstructing the events related to the Langley Cyber Attack for Mr. Vizard. In addition, USAF representatives brilliantly articulated to Mr. Vizard how the Langley Cyber Attack and USAF communicators have been seminal in recents developments in USAF Information Operations (IO) doctrine.

Mr. Vizard has informed us that Popular Science will print a feature article on the Langley Cyber Attack in the February-March time frame in 1999.
